COTTAGE ROW CONVERSION IN BERWICKSHIRE
A former row of four cottages that originally formed part of a Berwickshire castle/ country house estate. The cottages had fallen into disrepair and the client’s intention is to revitalise and modernise the building and use it as a generously sized single dwelling that faces onto a private garden courtyard. The project involves the reconfiguration of the historic layout to provide a large central volume for living/ kitchen/ dining activities and a mezzanine level for more contemplative yoga/ reading activities. The existing building interior had already lost most of the original historic features such as cornicing, floorboards and fireplaces so the design has evolved to reinterpret form a new more contemporary cottage character. A new entrance porch and 'muddy boot' entrance for the farming family will also be provided as modest extensions, with the new rear porch also doubling as a sheltering enclosure with in-built benching for barbecues and family gatherings. Follow this link for another example of a project involving alterations and extension to a listed property.
